The seismic hazard in the region is significant. The geologic record is filled with such events, including ones of serious magnitude. The
The Columbia River Gorge is a major transportation corridor. Barge traffic plies the water of the Columbia, with I-84 and railways on the southern banks, and State Hwy 14 and another railway on the northern side, all accomodating hazardous material transportation.
The "Gorge" is very succeptible to winter storm closures, and land/rock slides may occur any time of the year, making very important for all to be prepared to be isolated for extended periods of time.
